East Coast animal shelters still recovering from Hurricane Sandy

Hurricane Sandy wreaked havoc along the Eastern Seaboard months ago, but many residents and local businesses are still feeling the pain of rebuilding and recovery. Natural disasters are not only unpredictable, but they can be extremely expensive when it comes to repairing sustained damages.

New Jersey and New York residents are still recovering from the superstorm. According to the Associated Press, Toms River - a New Jersey town - had just 60 of 2,600 homes escape damage. Many people are still unable to return to their houses. The case is similar for Lavallette, a town slightly more north, where residents were cleared to return home one month ago, but many buildings are still vacant.

According to the Huffington Post, animal shelters are facing thousands of dollars in losses and are banding together to help one another out. Many are still in need of assistance, such as funding, supplies and volunteers.

"It really strained resources and tested the abilities of the shelter community and rescue organizations," Brian Shapiro, New York state director for the Humane Society of the United States, told the news source. "Lessons are going to be learned about what worked, what didn't work … Even though this was a disaster, at the same time, I think it's going to make all parties stronger."

It's important for businesses to be properly insured for a number of situations. Otherwise, the cleanup period could be excessively long and expensive. To find a comprehensive solution, companies would be well-advised to work with commercial insurance specialists.

In the case of natural disasters, commercial property insurance is highly beneficial. By working with professionals that specialize in business policies, owners can rest assured that the unique needs of their firm will be taken into account.
